At Hedingham Sixth Form, we have a several courses which require students to carry out some form of work experience. The most notable of which being the T Level Digital Business Services course.
As part of T Level qualifications, students are required to carry out a work placement totaling 315 hours of on the job experience. Where possible the work placement should be as close to the programme of study students are studying, however it is understood that the ideal work placement might not exist in every sense of the word, and part of the work placement (alongside being able to practice the specific skills students have developed 'on course') is the opportunity for students to gain experience of being a professional in an operating business on a day to day basis.
The structure of work placements can be made bespoke based on the needs of the businesses, however most follow one of the two following formats.
Option 1: "1 day per week" - starting at the end of Year 12 with a 3 day induction. Students then spend 39 weeks doing a 8-hour day at work placement (39 x 8 = 312, plus 3 hour induction = 315 hours).
Option 2: "block placement" - starting at the end of Year 12 with a block of 3 weeks, then students carry out 2 further blocks of 3 weeks in Year 13. Students work 5 days per week, doing a 7-hour working day. (9 weeks x 5 days = 45 days x 7 hours = 315 hours).
Option 3: "bespoke" - a bespoke work placement matches the individual needs of the business. These are harder for our students as it means they are out of the classroom at different times to their peers. Where possible, we ask employers to select from one of the other options. However, if there are no alternatives, we can work with employers to see whether or not this would be feasible.
If you would be interested in providing a placement opportunity for one of our students, or would like more information, please get in touch via employerplacements@hedingham.essex.sch.uk.
Please see the below for current and upcoming opportunities for T Level employer placements.
We currently require 2 work placements for Year 13 students studying the T Level Digital Business Services course. Students studying this course have an "occupational specialism" of a "Data Technician". This means the core part of their course has been learning about how businesses collect, store, manage and utilise data across their business. This covers a wide variety of areas including business finance, recruitment, marketing data and more. Students are expected to be able to analyse this data to identify patterns and trends, then to make data backed suggestions on how businesses might adapt their current practice to enhance their business.
If you deal with sales data on a day to day basis then having an extra pair of eyes looking over your data to provide you with appropriate analytics about your top selling products, the items you are making the most profit out of, or how different deals and offers might be affecting your bottom line, could be incredibly useful.
Placements for T Level Business Services DO NOT have to be within the technology sector, just within any business that deals with data. If you are a business who exists within the technology sector, but do not deal with large quantities of data, you may still be able to offer a suitable work placement for students as they also learn about upcoming and emerging technologies and how businesses might be using these to move their business practises forward.
For these particular students we would be looking at offering a weeklong induction period, followed by a 2 day per week placement starting as soon as possible running until around the end of April time. Due to adjustments to working conditions, there is the option of offering 20% of the work placement as "remote working", please let us know if this is something you would like to consider.
From June 2024 we will require 4 work placements for Year 12 students currently in their first year of study of their T Level Digital Business Services course.
