flying high
We’re thrilled to share some uplifting news from one of our students, who has been pursuing her passion for glider flying!
I’m Eleanor and I’m learning to fly gliders. Gliders look like small aeroplanes with long wings, but they don't have engines.
I had my first glider flight when I was 6 years old, and I started training for solo a year ago. The youngest age you're allowed to fly a glider on your own is 14, and I’m currently aiming to fly solo on or near to my 14th birthday in July.
We are towed up by either a tug aeroplane or a winch and then use warm air currents to stay up and gain height. Gliders can often fly for many hours and cover hundreds of kilometres in distance. My longest single glider flight is over 2 hours.
