Music
Curriculum Intent
As the Music Department of Hedingham School, we believe that a Musical education is the right of every pupil. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
From Year 7, students not only develop a general interest and appreciation for different music, but they are also prepared for the three components of GCSE Music: Performing, Composing and Listening. There, from this, students are provided opportunities to perform, compose, listen to, review, and evaluate music on a regular basis, linking in key concepts and skills associated in preparation of this. They do this across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the words of great composers and musicians. Students spend lesson time understanding and exploring how music is created, produced, communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
Music comes in many forms, and we encourage students to sing and use their voices, either in the classroom or in our school Choir. They have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology to create music, and progress to the next level of musical excellence. The Music Department offers lunchtime and after-school music clubs, including the freedom of independently booking music practise rooms to further enhance their learning and exposure to music. Additionally, students have the opportunity to take up music tuition; music trips; visiting workshops; and end of terms concerts and performances.
