Hedingham School Sixth Form student, Ben Harrington, was delighted to hear recently that he had been selected as a semi- finalist in a prestigious competition run by YouTube. The Vlogstar Challenge is powered by the Jack Petchey Foundation and Media Trust in partnership with YouTube and the Evening Standard. The programme gives 16-25 year olds the opportunity to articulate and share their passions through video blogs. Ben entered a short video of a review for the film Hot Fuzz, which he put together with the help of his friend Jamie Bull. Hot Fuzz is a 2007 British action comedy film directed by Edgar Wright, written by Wright and Simon Pegg, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost. Pegg and Frost play police officers attempting to solve a series of mysterious deaths in Sandford, a village in the West Country. A vlog, for the uninitiated is a blog in which the postings are primarily in video form.

Ben, who is 16 years old and lives in Halstead, is studying Photography A Level and thought the competition would be a good way of honing his vlogging skills.  The clip he put together was filmed at different venues around the school site and was both visually engaging and fast paced.

Ben has been invited, along with the other semi-finalists, to Google UK in London where the YouTube offices are situated where he will spend a day developing his skills in workshop situations. Following this, regional winners will get access to YouTube’s state of the art production space to learn additional new skills and develop film material for their YouTube channels.
